SCAVENGER HUNT | ARDENTOLOGY {11 Concepts of Composition}

This year’s Ardentology class was amazing. We were blessed to have almost 20 students! I remember Rick and I staring at all the empty chairs the morning of, getting ready for our biggest class to date and feeling a little nervous ;/.  What a blessing as God brought us exactly the amount of students we ended up having room for lol.

We started the day with one of our favorite curriculum pieces: 11 Concepts of Composition.  Throughout the class we try to stress taking a photo in the unique way that YOU see it. We urge our students to really THINK about what it is they are wanting to capture/convey and make a DECISION as to how to best accomplish this. Whether it is the placement of the subject in the frame, a simple background, the use of color etc… we want them to be intentional when creating their images. The further encourage people to not just attend our class but also have their cameras in their hands for days after, we created a ‘scavenger hunt’ for them to complete. The rules were they each had to capture a photo for each of the 11 concepts of composition and post them to our groups Facebook Page. Here are the concepts their were striving to capture:

  • Depth of Field
  • Framing
  • Simplicity and Background
  • Perspective
  • Color
  • Rule of Thirds
  • Leading Lines
  • Viewpoint
  • Negative Space
  • Symmetry
  • Depth and Layering

From those who completed the challenge we would then choose a winner who would receive a complimentary one on one hour long mentoring session.  This year we had 4 individuals successfully complete the hunt and we are so happy to be able to share some of our favorite of their images with you all! As the years go on Rick and I always see a direct link between those who challenge themselves to complete the scavenger hunt and the students who seem to improve the most with their photography skills. Learning is ALWAYS important but practice and having your camera in your hand is SUCH an important part of pushing yourself. Big thank you to Elizabeth, Stephanie, Desarae and Lexi for all of your hard work. It definitely shows in the beautiful images you created and we appreciate your dedication to learning! Check out a few of our favorite student shots and be sure to look at the END of this post for the announcement of our winner!
